The grand finale. Student docents presented the semesters work. From study and excursions related to the study all the way to the final art pieces, the students shared their learning journey.
They lead our community through a series of mini talks they have been working on and rehearsing for the past two weeks. They stood tall and proud as they took us from Holocaust survivors, MLK Jr., Black History month, Women’s History month and Earth sciences all the back around to social emotional learning.
So proud of their hearts, their minds and their efforts.

Cultivating a love for the Sonoran desert. If we want to take care of the planet we must first fall in love with her. Today we sat in a magic spot somewhere in the desert and painted what we saw in silence. The goal was to communicate in some way with the plants around you.
These paintings were made with paints made from my super greens smoothie mix, madder root, indigo, charcoal and turmeric.
Ages 5-13

Earth studies continue with the study of trash. As we prepare for a tour of a local landfill we are looking at statistics in math, doing an experiment of biodegradable vs non and finding art inspiration by studying Lonnie Holley.
We’ve been collecting some trash in the near by wash for the past month and adding to it with non recyclables from home. Today we looked at some of Lonnie’s sculptures and listens to him talk about his work. Then the kids pulled from the pile of trash to create sculptures.
Last slide is Lonnie and some of his work.

What woman won a Nobel peace prize in economics?
Elinor Ostrom
What is the tragedy of the commons? What is a common pool of resource? How do you sustain resources and communities? Who should govern those resources?
After studying the work of Elinor Ostrom children were grouped in small “villages” where their common pool resource was a pond with fish. It took them several tries to figure out what needed to be done to bring fairness in their village and keep their resources from exhaustion.
We wanted to honor Elinor with an experiment that gave children an experience of her work. After an in-depth discussion about the planet’s common resources and some statistics on what countries are consuming them unequally, we began an exploration of solutions. This subject will carry us through April art classes which will be focused on earth sciences.
Our art sculptures were made from locally harvested materials and inspired by the art sculptures created by Andy Goldsworthy. Andy uses only what he finds in the natural world he is in at the time to build his temporary sculptures. This means no glue, string, or tape. Only plants were used in these final art works. And the common poll resource (Art materials) had to be agreed upon and used according to the students agreements.

Representation. What does it mean? Why does it matter? Tawny Chatmon is a photographer who grew up going to art museums. “After viewing a hundred portraits then I would come along one that looked like me.” She noticed that Black faces were under represented and under celebrated in the art museums she visited. Millions walk through museums like this everyday, is it just the way it’s always going to be? What Can one person do?
Her love for the Venetian era inspired her works in both “The Redemption” and “The Awakening”, the two collections our students studied. She began to reimagine a world where Black childhood was celebrated and she used her camera to document her ideas. After contemplating the importance of representation and it’s effect, we considered roles we found important in the world, such as presidency, health care, and education then considered the representation in these fields.
The students used these images to interpret their ideas and combined them with their studies of Tawny’s work and message. Ages 5-13
The last slide is a photo of Tawny’s work from “The Awakening” collection. Please view more of her incredible contributions here @tawnychatmon @path_edu_org

Frida Kahlo suffered immense pain. After polio at age 6 her right leg became several inches shorter than her left leg. Her iconic style was greatly influenced by her desire to keep eyes away from her physical asymmetry. She wore long dresses to cover her legs and many times adorned her hair in braids, ribbons and large flowers to keep attention on her head.
After a major bus and trolly accident at age 18, where a handrail rail went through her hips, she underwent 35 surgeries. Her works, mostly self portraits, where depictions of her reality. Never has one woman artist been as influential and inspiring around the world as Frida. Collage ages 5-14

Did you know Mt. Lemmon in Tucson,AZ was named after a woman botanist? Sara Plummer Lemmon collected, studied and cataloged the plants along the 9,000ft + summit of the Santa Catalina Mountains in the early 1900’s. Lemmon and her husband John contributed some of the founding collections housed in the worlds largest public university herbarium in Berkeley CA, where they currently house over 2.2 million species of plants! Only a handful of mountains have ever been named after a woman. Way to go Tucson!
After learning a little bit about Sara’s life we honored her contributions with botany inspired collages. Art by students ages 5-13

Studies of Jean-Michel Basquiat.
As we continue our celebration of Black history contributors we take a peek at some of the amazing work done by the most popular street artists of all time.
After a car accident Jean-Michel studied the book, Gray’s Anatomy, gifted to him by his mother. This influenced his works to include bones, skulls and human forms.
Here is how our students interpreted his style.

Changemaker Art
Changemaker Art highlights the art of underrepresented cultures and values by putting them in leadership roles for students. The subjects and art mediums become an entry point for social emotional learning, priming students for deep inquiry and meaningful dialogue. These art classes are a direct antidote to the lineage of suffering caused by oppression.
Changemaker art is currently being taught at P.A.T.H. Academy
a progressive school K-5 school
